The purpose and goals of this class is to introduce Chinese students going abroad for University study. The training will focus on Writing, Research and Presentation Skills. These skills are critical to success in any undergraduate program. Students will learn through a series of 10, 2  hour classes the proper writing structure for University level. This course will include Writing exercises, Oral and PPT Presentations, Research, Reading homework, and general English grammar and sentence structure. It is the goal of this course to provide students the skills through lectures, examples and especially practice.

Each student is expected to be prepared with proper writing material, computing device to write essays and perform research on the Internet. Students will also be given Writing and Reading homework. It is imperative that the homework be completed everyday to enhance their skills.

Writing/Presentation Class Syllabus

Class 1: Introductions

Developing ideas and constructing an Outline.

Class 2: Writing Styles

There are 5 basic writing genres. Most writing for University level is in the Report Writing category. But there are different genres for this category.

Class 3: Composition Construction

Students will learn the proper construction for a Report style essay. This will include topics such as the Rule of 3, Introduction of essay, Body of essay and conclusion of essay, and other appropriate topics.

Class 4: Discussion of Problems

This class will focus on the problems the students displayed through the previous writing in the areas of Grammar, Spelling, Sentence structure, and Story flow. Common problems will be discussed and corrected. Read to improve all English. Teach students to learn new ways of learning higher level oral and written English. Follow-on reading will be assigned.

Class 5: Research

Students will learn research techniques and use of internet, libraries, and other sources of information. Learn to distill the relevant information for inclusion in a report. All internet based information will be from Yahoo or other “English only” websites.

Follow-up: A general discussion of the performance and problems encountered from this class.

Class 6 and 7: A Great PPT Presentation

The class will learn the basic “proper” elements for a professional PPT presentation, including examples, Story lines, Outlines, and Presentation techniques. Students will also be invited to attend a local Toastmasters meeting to view presentations in English by members of the club.

Class 8: Other Writing for communications

Writing professional emails, professional letters, effective memos, etc. Students will learn the proper excepted manner to write professional communications (not WeChat style).

Classes 9 and 10: Write and Present

Students write and present a variety of styles, including writing an essay, developing a PPT in a team, performing a team presentation, writing communication letters and memos, developing outlines etc. The purpose is to provide as much practice as possible. Teacher and other students will evaluate the style and composition of other students.
